The Navier-Stokes Announcement: A case study in mathematical values

On September 8, 2026, OpenAI announced a resolution of the Navier-Stokes problem. I had expected to feel excitement if a solution was announced. Instead, my reaction was one of grief and revulsion. I will use the announcement to explore the universal human desires that underlie my reaction, I hope in a fashion that will reach beyond mathematicians.
